Police in Prince George’s County, Maryland, say a man fleeing a traffic jam was killed after crashing into northeast DC late Sunday night.

A press release Monday identified the man as Isiah Smith, 28, of DC

Police said the crash happened near a park on Michigan Avenue and Bunker Hill Road less than a minute after Smith fled from an officer who had tried to pull him over to Hyattsville in Prince George’s County.

The incident began unfolding around 10:55 p.m. Sunday. Prince George’s County police said an officer observed Smith behind the wheel of a silver-colored Acura driving “in an erratic manner” and tried to pull him over. Police said Smith first stopped, but when the officer went to the car, he sped off.

The officer activated his light and siren and chased the fleeing car. Another officer ran the marks on his mobile computer and told the previous officer that the marks did not belong on Acura.

“At the same time, when the officer’s supervisor then canceled the pursuit under the department’s policy, the driver lost control of his car and crashed into a tree.”

It is unclear why the prosecution was interrupted or what the department’s policy for police prosecutions is. Information on police pursuits has been removed from the public version of the department’s general order manual. The WTOP has asked Prince George’s police for clarification.

Prince George’s County police said the accident happened 43 seconds after Smith tried to flee from the officer.

Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer who initiated the prosecution has been put on administrative leave which is a protocol.
