Darrell Brooks, the suspect in the deadly Christmas parade attack in Waukesha, Wisconsin, was caught in a stark new mugshot ahead of his first court appearance Tuesday, charged with premeditated murder.
The 39-year-old bearded suspect is seen in dreadlocks and wearing a green prison vest in the gaping mug, which was taken Tuesday morning.
Brooks, who has a long rap sheet, was arrested and faces five counts of intentional homicide in Sunday’s deadly attack that killed five people and injured at least 48 more.
He allegedly drove his SUV into a Christmas parade in the city while fleeing a domestic dispute.
Brooks was last released from custody after issuing a $ 1,000 cash bond on Nov. 11, an amount that the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office said was “inappropriately low given the nature of recent charges” against him.
Brooks had been charged Nov. 5 with preventing a police officer, battery, reckless danger, disorder and bail crime in a home abuse case, court records show.
Waukesha police chief Daniel Thompson said the motive for the attack was still a mystery, but that it was clear the suspect had acted on purpose.
“He was driving right through the barricades and the officers,” Thompson told the reporter, adding that police have ruled out terrorism as a motive.
Waukesha County District Attorney Susan Opper said the suspect acted alone.
Brooks is being held without bail until he appears in court later Tuesday.
