Vice President Kamala Harris and Transport Minister Pete Buttigieg join forces on Thursday as they visit Charlotte, North Carolina, to promote President Biden’s $ 1.2 million two-part infrastructure package, which the president signed last month.
The White House says that during the trip, Harris and Buttigieg, who are part of a broad effort by the Biden administration to show how the massive infrastructure measure will benefit Americans, discuss how the law “will upgrade our nation’s infrastructure and create well-paying union jobs in North Carolina. “
But the merger between the vice president and the secretary of transport comes amid heightened talk and speculation about whether Harris and Buttigieg could potentially run for the Democratic presidential candidate in 2024 if Biden ultimately decides not to seek another term in the White House.
WHEN BIDEN IS 79, THERE IS NO SLOPE IN SPECULATIONS ON WHETHER HE WILL APPLY FOR RE-ELECTION IN 2024
The 57-year-old Harris, the first female and black vice president in American history, and the 39-year-old Buttigieg, the first openly gay cabinet secretary confirmed by Congress, were rivals along with Biden in the large field of candidates for the Democratic presidential candidate in 2020. Harris completed its bid at the end of 2019, ahead of the primary calendar. Buttigieg, who narrowly won the Iowa caucus, dropped out in early March. Both ended up supporting Biden, who won the Democratic nomination before defeating Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election.
While Harris and Buttigieg are said to be friendly, experts see them as potential rivals if Biden decides not to seek re-election.
ANOTHER TOP ADVISOR TO VICE PRESIDENT HARRIS STEPS DOWN
The vice president hugged Buttigieg before boarding Air Force Two Thursday morning. And on the plane to North Carolina, the Secretary of Transportation was asked about the speculations in 2024.
“It’s 2021. And the whole point of campaigns and elections is, when they go well, you’re allowed to govern. And we’re totally focused on the current job. I’m looking forward to being part of a team led by the President and the vice president. “Buttigieg said according to a pool report.
Biden, who turned 79 last month, made history last year when he became the oldest person ever elected president. If he fights for re-election in 2024 and wins, Biden would be 82 at his second inauguration and 86 at the end of his second term.

Asked in March at his presidency’s first formal press conference about his 2024 plans, Biden said: “My answer is yes. I plan to run for re-election. That is my expectation.”
Democratic sources tell Fox News that the president repeated that message during a virtual fundraiser last month, and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki recently said it is Biden’s intention to run again in 2024.
