Corner Brook Woman pleads guilty to stealing from Minor Hockey Association

A Corner Brook woman has pleaded guilty to stealing more than $ 80,000 from the city’s smaller hockey association.

47-year-old Melissa Williams had initially pleaded not guilty to six fraud-related charges, including theft over $ 5,000, publication of forged documents and possession or trading of credit card data.

But in provincial court this week, the Crown and the defense agreed to withdraw four of the charges in return for guilty charges against the remaining two, namely theft over $ 5,000 and illegal possession, use or trade of credit card data.

Williams served as treasurer and administrator of the smaller hockey board between 2017 and 2019. The lack of money led to a large debt for the association, which they have since managed to pay off through fundraising and help from the city.

The case will be back in court at the end of January, when a sentencing will be introduced prior to the sentencing.
