WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Courtroom on Monday lifted its maintain on a Louisiana case that might power the state to redraw congressional districts to spice up Black voting energy.
The order follows the court docket’s rejection earlier in June of a congressional redistricting map in Alabama and unfreezes the Louisiana case, which had been on maintain pending the choice in Alabama.
In each states, Black voters are a majority in only one congressional district. Decrease courts had dominated that the maps raised considerations that Black voting energy had been diluted, in violation of the landmark federal Voting Rights Act.
The justices put the Louisiana case on maintain and allowed the state’s challenged map for use in final 12 months’s elections after they agreed to listen to the Alabama case.
