'We want justice': Victims of sexual abuse by French Catholic Church seek financial compensation

On 5 October 2021, the Unbiased Fee on Sexual Abuse within the French Catholic Church printed its report. Its revelations had been chilling.

From 1950 to 2020, at least 330,000 minors had been victims of sexual abuse by clerics or laypersons throughout the Church.

In response, two unbiased our bodies had been created to cope with reparations: The Nationwide Physique for Recognition and Reparation, and the Fee for Recognition and Reparation. Greater than a 12 months later, have the victims been capable of finding peace? Removed from it, says Nancy Couturier.

She was assaulted and raped as a baby and was the primary particular person to cope with the Fee for Recognition and Reparation. For her, victims urgently want monetary compensation.

In search of monetary justice

"We're asking for justice. Monetary justice. We do not have civil justice anymore. We would like recognition of what we’ve gone by way of, [we demand] that victims are supported to the identical extent as they suffered ... and are nonetheless struggling, mentally and morally," Nancy Couturier instructed Euronews.

After feeling humiliated by the Fee's proposal for compensation, Nancy determined to arrange an affiliation to assist different victims assert their rights. She’s not the one one who's offended: some had been solely knowledgeable of the proposal by mail.

"You learn the letter: the sufferer is well-known, the monks are well-known, every little thing that occurred to her is well-known... And then you definately learn €37,000. I believed: that’s not attainable, €37,000.", Nancy stated.

"To get the €60,000, you have to must be bedridden, I do not know... It is disgusting, it isn't on!"

€60,000 is the utmost quantity of compensation out there. That’s not sufficient for Mr Sannier, the affiliation's lawyer. He instructed Euronews that compensation ought to replicate the offences dedicated.

"It will not exceed the quantity I bought earlier than the judicial courtroom in Saint-Etienne for a priest who put his hand on a boy's buttocks," Jean Sannier defined.

"If you've spent greater than €60,000 on remedy and also you're capped at €60,000, you will not get any compensation," he added.

For Mr Sannier, that is about safeguarding the Church's cash. The president of the Fee for Recognition and Reparation, Antoine Garapon, believes that no amount of cash can restore these shattered lives.

"We expect it will be dishonest to carry out the prospect [...] of a full reparation that they'll by no means get since you merely can’t make up for what’s occurred to those folks," he instructed Euronews.

One other trigger for concern is the silence. To this point, lower than 1% of the 200,000 victims in France have begun a reparation course of.
