Sweden promises to uphold fundamental European values as it takes over EU Presidency

Sweden has taken over the rotating presidency of the EU Council for the third time since becoming a member of the bloc. The primary main assembly of its present time period will happen on Friday. 

Stockholm has promised to uphold basic European values over the six-month stint however some EU analysts query whether or not home politics will have an effect. 

The nordic nation's new right-wing coalition authorities is propped up by the far-right Sweden Democrats and led by Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson. 

“Sweden is taking up the Presidency at a time when the European Union is dealing with unprecedented challenges," he stated.

"A greener, safer, and freer Europe is the muse of our priorities.” 

Stockholm stated its 4 priorities have been: safety, resilience, prosperity, and democratic values.

“This Authorities will make Sweden’s work within the EU a prime precedence," EU Affairs Minister Jessika Roswall added.

"It's in Sweden’s pursuits to take care of unity within the EU and advance points that require joint options,”

For the subsequent six months, Sweden can be tasked with setting the political agenda and steering the controversy amongst member states.
