Protesters in Helsinki climbed onto cranes on a cargo ship in an effort to cease it unloading coal from Russia on Tuesday morning.

Ten activists from Greenpeace Suomi scaled perimeter fences on the Salmisaari port within the Finnish capital and hooked up themselves to cranes on the Maltese-registered Transbaltic, which sailed from the Russian port of Luga on Monday night time.

"The ship has 4 cranes they use for unloading and we managed to climb on three of them so principally it stopped a lot of the unloading," says Matti Liimatainen from Greenpeace Suomi.

"The issue I've is that one month in the past Helen despatched out a press launch saying any longer they will not be procuring coal from Russia anymore due to the scenario in Ukraine," Greenpeace Suomi's Matti Liimatainen explains.

"Someway I believe that is fairly a sometimes Finnish factor, we're so bureaucratic and so bloody trustworthy if we now have an settlement we should always fulfil it. Even when Russia is a rustic which does not fulfil human rights agreements," he tells Euronews.

The protesters had been faraway from the cranes by firefighters, and dock employees had been capable of proceed unloading the Transbaltic's cargo of coal.

Helsinki Police say they detained 9 individuals on the dock.
