Tiverton fire: Two arrested after devastating fire destroy two businesses

Two people have been arrested in connection with a major fire that took place in Tiverton last weekend.

Crews from Devon and the Somerset Fire and Rescue Service were first called to the scene in Tiverton Business Park around 6.30pm on Sunday 2 January after receiving several calls from the public.

Twelve fire trucks plus special equipment including a ladder and high-volume pump were all sent to the scene, as well as police and ambulance services.

Although there was no personal injury, two companies were destroyed as a result and a third was partially damaged.

In their latest update, Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that two people have been arrested on suspicion of arson.

In a statement on their website, a police spokesman said: “After the on-site investigation work with specialized fire investigators, it was believed that the fire had started on purpose.

“As a result of investigations, a 43-year-old man from Ilfracombe and a 38-year-old woman from Barnstaple were arrested on suspicion of arson. Both have since been released on police bail pending further investigations.

“The officers are eager to talk to anyone who may have been near the industrial area on the evening the incident took place, especially a group of young people who may have been passing by at the time.

According to the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service website, crews have now successfully extinguished all hotspots on site.
