The Royal Mint has released Platinum cars 50p commemorative coin, one month from Queen Elizabeths historic day of accession.
February 6 marks 70 years on the throne of Britain’s longest reigning monarch and also date when her beloved father King George VI died.
The silver 50p ($ 0.94) coin has a silhouette of the queen on horseback on the side of the head.

The equestrian design, by the artist John Bergdahl, was personally approved by the Queen herself and is reminiscent of the designs used to mark Her Majesty’s coronation in 1953 as well as the golden anniversary in 2002.
On the other side of the coin is the number 70 along with the Queen’s cypher in a design by Osborne Ross.

“To celebrate this landmark event, the official Platinum Jubilee collection, including the new 50p and traditional £ 5 ($ 9.45) crown, features a unique commemorative design on both sides of the coin,” said Clare Maclennan, Royal Mint’s Director of Commemorative Coins. said in a statement.
“Designed by renowned artists and made with original craftsmanship, Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee coins are lasting works of art that will be collected, appreciated and passed on for generations.”
This is the first time a 50p coin has been released to celebrate a royal event. The design was first unveiled 70 days before the anniversary of the Queen’s inauguration.
“The Queen’s legacy of coins spans her significant reign, with the Royal Mint striking five definitive portraits of Her Majesty on official British coin and celebrating past anniversaries,” said Royal Mint Museum historian Chris Barker.
“The 1977 Silver Jubilee Crown was the first major British commemorative coin produced in The Royal Mints’ Llantrisant home after the London minting ceased in 1975,” he added.
As part of the celebration, the Royal Mint has donated 7,000 coins to children completing the special anniversary edition of The Queen’s Green Canopy RFS Junior Forester Award, which aims to inspire young people to learn about the benefits of trees and help forestry in their communities.
The traditional £ 5 ($ 9.45) crown has a unique commemorative design on both sides of the coin and there is also a special 2022 sovereign coin that is released.
Timothy Noad, designer of the 2022 Platinum Jubilee Sovereign said: “It’s a huge privilege to be chosen three times to design the reverse for The Sovereign.
“The first time was 20 years ago, for Her Majesty the Queen’s Golden Anniversary in 2002, and the second time was the first new St. George and the Dragon since Pistrucci’s iconic design in 2005. I’m very proud to make it a hat – trick!”
The 50p coin sells for £ 7 ($ 13.23).
