The total number surpasses the previous record set during the third wave of the pandemic – 4,812 new cases on 16 April.

Another seven deaths were blamed on COVID-19.

Hospitals reported 440 people were in the hospital, an increase of 20 in one day, including 169 in intensive care.

The ICU figure – a key indicator for public health officials considering lockdown measures – has been rising, but at a much slower pace than in previous waves.

The largest increase in new cases was found in those aged 20 to 39 years – 2,662, which was an increase from 1,912 the day before.

Cases rose across the province with the highest number in Toronto with 1,612 new infections, Peel Region with 491, Ottawa with 486, York Region with 470 and Durham Region with 334.

The province is trying to put booster shots into as many adults as possible, on top of the first and second dose for the unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.

“#TeamOntario administered 253,258 vaccines yesterday. We are using all the tools we have to increase capacity so more Ontarians can get their booster faster. Please order your shot as soon as possible,” Premier Doug Ford tweeted on Thursday.

Health Minister Christine Elliott wrote online that the province distributes millions of rapid tests each week to thousands of workplaces, hospitals, home and local care, long-term care, nursing homes, schools and child care centers.

New COVID-19 cases are predominantly in the fully vaccinated. Of the 5,790 new cases on Thursday, 4,392 were in individuals who had received at least two doses of a vaccine, 222 cases were in the partially vaccinated, 971 were in the unvaccinated, and the vaccination status of 205 was unknown.

According to data provided by the Ontario Science Advisory Table, Omicron now causes an estimated 87% of COVID-19 cases.

The Ontario data show that COVID-19 intensive coating is 11.4 per million inhabitants – 99 per. million for unvaccinated and 3.5 per. million for fully vaccinated.

The chance of ending up in intensive care with COVID-19 is reduced by 96.5% with at least two doses of a vaccine, says scientific table.
