LG unveils its first gaming laptop

We’re used to LG impressing us with its large yet lightweight Gram laptops, but now the company is trying to trigger a similar reaction by launching a 17.3-inch gaming laptop.

LG is using the premium UltraGear brand for its first ever gaming laptop, called the 17G90Q. On paper, it boasts some impressive specifications by combining an Intel 11th generation Tiger Lake-H Core processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 Max-Q Graphics GPU. Add to that dual-channel 16 or 32 GB DDR4 RAM, two M.2 SSD slots that hold up to 1 TB of storage (each we must assume), and you definitely have knowledge of a high-performance laptop. The icing on the cake is a 17.3-inch 1080p IPS display with a 300Hz refresh rate and 1ms response time.

Based on its experience in designing Gram laptops, LG has managed to include a 93Wh battery while keeping the notebook’s thickness of 21.4 mm (0.84 inches) and weight of 2.7 kg (5 , 82 lbs). The case is made of aluminum, the keyboard includes per-key RGB backlight, and 3D sound is delivered via a two-way speaker system (2W x four speakers) with DTS: X Ultra. A wide range of ports are available, including a USB 4 Gen 3 × 2 Type C (with Thunderbolt 4), a USB 3.2 Gen 2 × 1 Type C, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 × 1, HDMI, RJ45, DC-In, headphone jack and microSD / UFS. Wi-Fi 6E wireless is provided by Intel Killer Wireless.

Pushing a high-performance processor and GPU into a thin case will definitely produce a lot of heat under load. LG aims to keep it under control without making too much noise by using a steam chamber cooling system (you may remember that LG also used a steam chamber to cool its first 5G phone). You can keep track of temperatures, frequencies and overall performance using the included LG UltraGear Studio software. Hardware security comes in the form of a fingerprint reader on the power button.

If this sounds like your perfect gaming laptop, LG is expected to make it available sometime early next year in both the US and South Korea. The price has not been revealed, but with CES 2022 starting on January 4, you can expect this laptop to be shown along with details on how much it will cost. A realistic estimate of battery life would also be appreciated.
