One week into Ottawa’s campaign to vaccinate its youngest eligible population, one in four children aged five to 11 already has the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine in their arms.
Ottawa Public Health’s COVID-19 vaccination dashboard was updated Friday morning to show that 19,020 children in this age group, or 25 percent of the total demographic population, have received their initial doses.
OPH’s vaccination rate for young children heads other health units in Ontario, according to provincial data. Timiskaming Health Unit, the closest, has currently given the first doses to about 23.7 percent of children.
The local vaccination campaign for young children began on Friday, with Ottawa’s chief physician saying Monday that 40 percent of those eligible already have appointments in the provincial booking system.
OPH’s dashboard has also begun tracking third doses of the vaccine, with 56,701 booster shots administered to Ottawa residents so far.
More than 28,000 Ottawa residents aged 70 and older have so far received their boosters, while other age groups have gradually obtained the third dose of coverage.

In line with the province’s extension of booster shots to people aged 50 and over, the vaccine reservation system will be open for local appointments from 1 p.m. since.
Across the city, 82 percent of residents have at least one dose and 77 percent have two shots.
OPH, meanwhile, reported 60 new COVID-19 cases on Friday as the number of active cases in the city rose to 363.

No new deaths related to the virus were included in the latest report.
The number of people in the hospital with COVID-19 in Ottawa dropped to 10 from Friday, with two people in the intensive care unit.
New COVID-19 outbreaks were declared in a multi-unit residence in Ottawa and at Half Moon Bay Public School, where two students tested positive for the virus.
There are now 27 ongoing outbreaks across Ottawa, 13 of which hit elementary schools and two of them are at local high schools.
