Hessle fire: explosions heard as firefighters tackle large fire near Hull | Hull

Firefighters tackle a huge fire and apparent explosions in an industrial area near Hull.

Some residents were evacuated from nearby houses, and emergency services warned residents to keep their doors and windows closed while responding to the incident in Hessle.

Daren Hale, head of Hull City Council, said he understood everyone had come safely out of the factory. “Everyone is counted on, is our understanding, but there is a toxic flag that has gone up in the sky that the Environmental Protection Agency is currently analyzing to find out what is in it,” he said.

He said it was Thompson’s plastic factory on the Priory Park property that had caught fire.

Humberside Fire and Rescue said they were present and added: “We advise local residents to close windows and doors. Please avoid the Priory Way to the A63 area and be aware that there is a large amount of smoke in the area and the surrounding roads. “

Police in Humberside also warned the public to avoid the area.

The NHS Yorkshire Ambulance Service said they received reports of a major fire at 3:53 p.m. They sent its dangerous area of operation along with two ambulances and a leader to the scene.

Footage posted on social media displayed flames and loud explosions near homes where a large plume of smoke rises into the sky.

An eyewitness told Radio Humberside that after the first explosion, lumps of what felt like polystyrene fell from the sky. “They’ve apparently showered #Hessle. It feels like polystyrene,” tweeted reporter James Hoggarth.

Hale said the fire had “extinguished” an electricity station. It caused the power outages, including to Priory Park’s traffic lights, which caused further queues, he added.

Emma Hardy, MP for Kingston upon Hull West and Hessle, also said there were power outages in Hessle as a result of the fire. She lives within a mile of the industrial area and said her partner called and asked where the candles were. “Northern Powergrid fixes it,” she said.

Grace Grant, 25, told the PA news agency she heard explosions coming from the fire.

“It was huge, smoke could be seen from miles away. When I left, there were explosions about every 10 seconds,” she said.

Anthony Whitley, who lives in Hessle, told the BBC he saw the roof of the factory near Saxon Way go up in flames.

Caroline Frost, a manager at Hessle Kindergarten, told the TV station: “It’s actually quite scary to hear the explosions. It’s a giant feather of black smoke, so we’re just moving as fast as we can to get things organized. “
